What is a Certificate of Origin (CO)?

A Certificate of Origin (CO) is an essential international trade document that certifies that goods in a specific export shipment were obtained, produced, manufactured, or processed in a particular country. This document also serves as a declaration by the exporter.

Millions of COs are issued annually, facilitating global trade. Since 1898, Chambers of Commerce have played a key role in issuing non-preferential COs, and their role was formally recognized through the 1923 Geneva Convention and subsequent Kyoto Convention, where governments designated Chambers as trusted authorities in the issuance of COs.

COs are critical in determining the import duties applied to goods and ensuring they meet the requirements of foreign customs, letters of credit, or buyer requests.

Beyond the Certificate of Origin – Legalization Services

Certain countries, particularly non-signatories to the Hague Convention, require commercial documents to be legalized by the U.S. Embassy or Consulate in the importing country. Legalization fees can be substantial, especially for countries like Algeria, Egypt, Iran, and UAE. The Swanton Area Chamber, through its partnership with AWTCC, offers legalization services to system users on an individual quoted basis. Simply request legalization services when submitting your application.
